Back to Black by Amy Winehouse is an amazing album full of songs that highlight Amy’s rich voice and witty lyrics. Back to Black led to 6 Grammy nominations and 5 wins for Amy Winehouse. Amy won 3 Grammy awards for “Rehab” (song of the year, record of the year, and best female pop vocal performance), a song off of Back to Black, 1 for best new artist, 1 for best pop vocal album, and was nominated for album of the year. Back to Black brings a soulful, moody feel through the vocals, but creates contrast with the jazzy upbeat instrumental music in the background, making for a perfect combination of joy and sadness. Most of the songs are about addiction, loss, and the downsides of love. Even with the sorrowful, brooding songs, Amy Winehouse still makes the songs relatable to listeners by adding her own confident one liners. For example, “Tears Dry On Their Own”, a song from Back to Black, talks about how her husband leaves her. Even with the love of her life gone, she still keeps the same faith in herself. No matter how much her songs talk about her struggles with addiction, she is still able to hold her head high. She gives off a feeling of confidence and power hardly ever used by women in music. Overall, I give Back to Black 5 out of 5 stars. Back to Black was an incredible album full of catchy yet deep songs and the full, vivid vocals of Amy Winehouse. Amy Winehouse paved the way for strong female singers in the music industry, leaving behind the legacy of her music.
